Valentine’s Day can be a difficult holiday for some.  Maybe you don’t have a significant other.  Maybe you don’t know what to get that significant other.  Maybe you are still working on paying off Christmas and would like to get something but not sure you can afford it.  Is Valentine’s Day a day where you are suppose to pay an arm and a leg for something anyway?  I mean after all we did just celebrate Christmas.

Valentine’s Day is a day of love.  A day to show your loved ones you care for them and would do anything for them.  However, some would argue that this should be done everyday anyway.  Unfortunately some need a specific day to remind that that girls like candy, flowers, and jewelry.  (Reminder to all boys: girls like all these gifts at any point during the year) 

According to History.com and Wikipedia we celebrate Valentine’s Day in February because of ancient Pagan festival called Lupercalia.  The festival went from February 13-15 and took place in Rome.  It was for the purpose of averting evil spirits and purifying the city, thus releasing health and fertility.  Shepherds would run up and down the city streets naked, for laughter and sport, striking those they met with shaggy thongs.  (Are these flip flop thongs or “Let Me See that Thong” thongs?)  History.com says they were whipped with skins of the animal just previously sacrificed.  (Romantic right!?)  Many women and children would get in their way purposefully believing that would those who were pregnant would be helped with delivery and those who weren’t would get pregnant.  This was later forbidden by a pope. 

St. Valentine could be one of many men from the Catholic church (we don’t know who it REALLY is).  Legend has it that one ruler had vast armies of men who had to abandon their young families for long periods of time.  This made the men half hearted and homesick.  To cure this the ruler did not allow any of the men to be married.  On St. Valentine did not like this and continued to marry lovers in secret.  He was later caught, arrested, and sentenced to death.  It is believed that the couples he wed would come visit him in his cell and pass him flowers and notes as symbols of their gratitude.  St. Valentine later fell in love with his jailers daughter.  ON the day of his execution,  February 14th, he passed her a note that said “from your Valentine.”  Tada! A tradition was born. 

We all know who Cupid is…the God of Erotic Love and Beauty–son of Venus (goddess of love) and Mercury (messenger god).  When Cupid’s mother Venus became jealous of the princess Psyche, who was so beloved by her subjects that they forgot to worship Venus, she ordered Cupid to make Psyche fall in love with the vilest thing in the world. When Cupid saw Psyche, he realized she was a babe and he fell in love with her.  He visited Psyche every night while she slept. Speaking to her so that she could not see him, he told her never to try to see him. Psyche, though, incited by her two older sisters who told her Cupid was a monster (the things sisters tell their brothers), tried to look at him and angered Cupid.  When he left, she looked all over the known world for him until at last the leader of the gods, Jupiter, gave Psyche the gift of immortality so that she could be with him.  What a glorious love story!

Now we use Cupid + St. Valentine = Flowers, Chocolate, Jewelry or….LINGERIE!
